Do It Yourself Genetic Tests

CBS Evening News just ran a story about At Home Genetic Testing.

A customer obtains a sample of their spit/sputum and sends it into the company. They can then log into a password secured website that gives them their results.

The tests will be available in over 6,500 Walgreens stores by Friday.

It costs between $20-250 dollars depending on what kind of results you want and the company claims to be 99.9% accurate.

The results "can" show if you are genetically predisposed to diseases such as breast cancer or Alzheimer's...or can let you know if you are a carrier of a genetic disease, such as Cystic Fibrosis.

So what do you think...good thing? bad thing? Do you want to “know” your future? Would you trust this test over the tests your doctor offer to perform at a much higher (typically $700 and up) cost?

  2. I still think it's better to go to a physician when dealing with tests like this. The results out of that box could have huge psychological ramifications and will play a huge part in major life decisions. Better to leave that to the professionals. Just my opinion.
